In 2012, I was a freshman in high school and had been a bonafide swiftie for exactly six years. This was around the time Taylor Swift was well beyond a household name, and really venturing into super stardom. Along with making bigger moves in the world of pop music, she was also making a bigger deal out of new music releases. Her fourth studio album RED was about to come out, and she had hosted a live stream album announcement as well as an album countdown which got me more excited than probably anything ever has.
On October 22, the album released. Every song was in perfect chronological order, telling a story of how her romantic endeavors had failed, and somehow perfectly explained my 14 year old hardships as well. I’ve probably tweeted and written every single lyric on that album in my diary. I was experiencing my first heartbreak at the same time the album came out, and I used each song to help me reason with what I was going through. I’m nearly 22 now, and although I’m not feeling relationships blues and confusion anymore, every theme on that album still feels perfectly relevant.
Every Taylor Swift album holds a special place in my heart, but something about the overall devastation of RED feels like the brand I will forever associate her with. It’s also the one album that I will always remember exactly how each song made me feel upon first listen.
